Inner peace.

What is inner peace?

Inner peace is the state of emotional and mental calm, balance, and clarity regardless of the presence of stress or difficulties. inner peace means being at ease with oneself or accepting one’s thoughts and feelings without being controlled by them, and experiencing a deeper contentment and harmony within oneself.

Finding inner peace.

You must have visited various YouTube channels and Google websites to know what inner happiness is. However, to achieve inner happiness, it is necessary that we, as multifaceted human beings, understand ourselves first. We must query about our existence in the world. What identities as an individual do I possess? In which things do I excel, and in which things am I weak?

Happiness depends upon ourselves.

The father of Philosophy, Aristotle (384-322 BC), once said, “Happiness depends upon ourselves“. Aristotle is one of the most influential figures in philosophy and science. He leverages the question-answer method to solve social issues in Athens. For that purpose, he relied on rational thinking and his inner voice.

Other philosophers’ views on inner peace

From Socrates’ belief that “knowing oneself is the beginning of wisdom,” to Buddha’s teachings on meditation and detachment, the journey to inner peace begins within.

Ancient thinkers like Epicurus and Marcus Aurelius, through Stoic philosophy, emphasized that peace lies not in controlling the world, but in mastering one’s reactions to it. Similarly, modern philosophers like Soren Kierkegaard and Gyan-pol Saart have explored the importance of self-realization—understanding who we really are and what gives meaning to our lives.

Our own identity for inner peace.

Finding inner peace requires more than a peaceful environment: it requires self-awareness. When we recognize our true identity, free from external expectations and comparisons, we begin to experience harmony between our thoughts, feelings, and actions. True happiness arises not from possessions or achievements, but from a deep connection with our inner self. In today’s fast-paced world, making time for self-reflection, creativity, and awareness can return us to a state of inner balance and lasting peace.

Psychological views on inner peace

Like other fields of study, Psychology has various views towards inner happiness. But the most prominent theory in modern Psychology is psychoanalysis. Sigmund Freud (1856- 1939) developed the concept of the unconscious mind. According to Freud, our unconscious mind influences our emotions in daily life, but we can’t easily recognize this.

Actually, Psychoanalysts divided human consciousness into three categories.

  • Consciousness: refers to the active part of our mind, which is what we are aware of at any given moment.
  • Subconsciousness: on the other side subconscious refers to the storage room of the mind, knowledge, and memories that we are not aware of right now but can be easily recalled.
  • Unconsciousness: Most importantly, unconsciousness refers to the deepest and most hidden memories of our mind; we are not aware of what is stored within it. Yet, it shapes our behavior.

Which level of consciousness resists inner peace?

It looks like our conscious part of the mind makes us uncomfortable, but psychoanalysis sees it from another perspective. According to Sigmund Freud, our forgotten or suppressed memories always haunt us because they are unresolved issues of our childhood, which we have suppressed through ego defense mechanisms.
